R.I.P. Morningside

Morningside is no more. It is being torn down, presumably to bring wealthier people into the neighborhood and cleanse the neighborhood of Thoreauvians.

Developers have big plans for Morningside Apartments

"Morningside in Winter"
Charlotte Observer 11/17/2005 High-density remake may be in works

Never content with historical structures, developers are now planning on razing the old familiar multi-cultural apartment community and replacing it with new buildings and people. Surely the developers are happy, and surely the tenents are unhappy. We know who wins in such cases. Those with he money.

I will personally miss living in what might well be the best example of interracial, multicultural cohabitation in Mecklenburg County, and hope they at least let the beautiful old trees remain standing.

If you have comments, praise or criticism of the new plan, please feel free to comment here.

Thanks,
Dave

"2nd Last Chance" by Bill Wiktorek

Imagine one man’s death throwing hundreds of Charlotteans into turmoil. 2nd Last Chance, answers the question of why the turmoil, by leading you through a suspenseful, tension filled, tale whose intrigue will keep you spellbound. The story revolves around a private human rehab organization that becomes profitable and catches the eye of the local mob Boss. A reluctant new leader aided by colorful characters with names like Zipper, Shoes, Flipper and Driver most of which call the street home must thwart the mob take over.

The author of this wonderful first novel, Bill Wiktorek, was a long-time manager of Morningside Apartments, and still helps out when not writing. You can order the book here or just drop by the office and ask for a copy. There should be a few hanging around.

Spring flowers arrive at Morningside!

Only days after the biggest snow storm in years, and a park full of people enjoying the sledding that has made our hills famous...the warm sun emerged, bringing flowers and springtime in its wake. And everyday seems to awaken yet another of our flowery wonders.

But along with the flowers, come the lions of March; the winds. And last week saw us with some of our citizens having to endure the ravages of wind, as power was knocked out for several hours. In all, more than 200,000 people in Mecklenburg County shared our quiet sabattical from the power grid.

A few days earlier, a failure at a substation brought temporary darkness and quietude to many in the Morningside/Plaza-Midwood area. Fortunately this incident was easier to tame, and bright modernity was returned to our fair community, in a but a few hours.

As warmer temperatures return, so will the festive jocularity that betrays the true character of our community. So get out! Enjoy the changes!

The Morningside Apartments in Charlotte is producing this blog in order to better serve our community. Watch for updates and specials on this page.

Charlotte, and North Carolina are among the most desirable locations in America today. And now you can become a part of this vibrant community. Morningside is not only a very affordable way to live in these tight economic times...it offers a better proximity to the nerve center of Charlotte than most other apartments in Charlotte. Some people choose Morningside as a place to begin their journey, only to find that a better deal is not to be found. Some become active members in Morningside-Commonwealth Association, and enjoy the fruits of helping to make our community an even better place to live.

Morningside is nestled within the historic Plaza-Midwood neighborhood of Charlotte, between Central and Commonwealth Avenue (north and south), and between Veteran's Park and Morningside Drive (west and east)...and yes, there are plenty of those big oak trees that Charlotte is so famous for...all around the apartments and the adjacent park.

There are plenty of places to shop, whether it be for groceries, used books (best in the city!), fast food, slow food, hard-to-find CDs, LPs and such, and a host of other things including very affordable furniture for decorating your new home. They also deliver.

The wondrous NODA Arts district is also close by, and we would invite patrons (and matrons)...as well as the artists themselves to come take a look at our historic little community to the south. Just a slide up Matheson Ave, around the Country Club...and you're practically here!

Elizabeth Stanleyville is also just a few blocks away. She is way cool. Need to bring back Stanley's though. On second thought, the new (well, relatively) tenant, VisArt Videos is a real treasure chest for hard-to-find film, videos, and DVDs. They have also sponsored the Charlotte Film Society. As a former student of film, I can attest that VisArt is, by far, the best in Charlotte. And you can walk there from here...perhaps on your way to the Community College.

Central Piedmont is consistently voted one of the best in the nation, and for good reason. If not walking...biking distance.
